Hawaii Tops Nation in Car Rental Rates for Christmas
December 19, 2013

Renting a car for Christmas is going to be an expensive situation if the check-in counter happens to be in Hawaii. A new survey from CheapCarRental.net has revealed that the cost of renting a car has risen just about everywhere throughout the island state for the holiday. In Honolulu, rates have strongly soared, and in Kauai and Maui they have skyrocketed.

For comparative purposes, the survey looked at 30 popular U.S. destinations. The Christmas period of December 23–27 served as the basis of comparison. In the end, Hawaiian cities landed in three of the top four positions. Renting a car in Honolulu will cost $127 per rental day for the most affordable vehicle, or 116% more than usual. But that’s nothing compared to the skyrocketing rental rates in two other Hawaiian cities elsewhere on the islands.

Maui’s Kahului easily snagged the number one spot on the survey with a holiday rental rate of $339 daily. Following closely in the number two position was Kauai’s Lihue, where the most affordable car will currently set renters back $272 per day. When one compares these figures to typical rates, car renters will be expected to pay more than 400% more at both destinations’ check-in counters this Christmas.

The following table shows the car rental rates of 30 major U.S. destinations during the Christmas timeframe, along with a comparison to regular prices. The rates shown reflect the average daily rate for the cheapest available car for the period spanning December 23 through December 27. Regular rates reflect the average rental car rates for January.
