Car Rental Rates Skyrocket 200% in Denver for Thanksgiving
November 26, 2013

Traveling home to Denver for Thanksgiving is going to cost more this year if renting a car is involved. In fact, according to a new survey from CheapCarRental.com, travelers can expect to pay nearly triple what they usually would at the Mile High City’s check-in counters. The survey specifically examined the car rental rates of 30 U.S. destinations over the holiday period spanning November 27 through December 1.

To rent the cheapest available car in the Coloradoan capital this Turkey Day, renters will have to spend $59 per rental day. At that price, they’ll be paying 195% more than, or nearly triple, the usual rate of $20. That figure also positions Denver as the biggest rate hiker percentage wise of all the destinations analyzed. When absolute price is the only consideration, however, Denver drops to sixth place in the rankings. (The table shown below provides the full survey results.)

Dollar-wise alone, New York City, not surprisingly, tops the list by a landslide as the USA’s priciest place to rent a car for Thanksgiving. Travelers to the Big Apple can anticipate pay $120 per day for a rental, which is more than double what they would normally be charged at the check-in counter. There is a bit of bright news for travelers to some U.S. destinations like St. Louis and Houston, though. In such locales, car rental rates have actually dropped by 30% over the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

The following table shows the car rental rates of 30 major U.S. destinations during Thanksgiving and compares those rates to regular rates. The prices shown reflect the average daily rate for the cheapest available car for the period spanning November 27 to December 1, 2013.
